Arthur Rowley is first in Shrewsbury Town Hall of Fame

English football's all-time record goal scorer Arthur Rowley is the first player to be named in Shrewsbury Town's Hall of Fame.Ten club 'legends' will be revealed over the next two months as Town promote their history at their Greenhous Meadow ground.

Rowley, who died in 2002, joined the Shrews in 1958 as player-manager.

He holds the record for the most goals in English league football, scoring 434 times for five clubs.

Rowley - the younger brother of Manchester United legend Jack Rowley - had an explosive left-foot shot.

He holds the club record for the most goals in a single season at both Leicester City and Shrewsbury, scoring 44 goals in 42 league matches at Leicester in 1956-57, and 38 goals in 43 games for Shrewsbury in 1958-59.

In his first season Rowley led Shrewsbury to promotion with 38 goals, and followed that up in division three, scoring 32, 28, 23 and 24 times over the next four seasons

He is also Shrewsbury's record League goalscorer with 152 goals, and Leicester's second all-time top scorer with 256 to his name.

Rowley began his career as an amateur at Wolves before turning professional with West Bromwich Albion in 1944.

He struggled at The Hawthorns, and in 1948 was sold to Fulham, where his 19 goals helped the side to the second division title.

Within 12 months he was sold to Leicester, where he remained until 1958 when he became the player-manager at Shrewsbury in the newly-created fourth division.

In his first season he led Shrewsbury to promotion with 38 goals, and followed that up in division three, scoring 32, 28, 23 and 24 times over the next four seasons.

He retired from playing in 1965, staying as boss until taking over at Sheffield United (1968-69) and Southend (1970-76).

Rowley and nine other 'legends' will be revealed before a gala dinner at Shrewsbury in October.
