But having been in talks with Cureton for a while, Simpson's patience has finally been rewarded.
And he told the club's official website: "Jamie has a goalscoring record as good as anyone playing in English football today.
"Hopefully he will add something a little different to our squad during this important run-in to the end of the season."
The 35-year-old will wear number 10 and is in line to make his debut on Friday night as Town travel to promotion rivals Bury.
