McIntyre aims for repeat comeback

Kevin McIntyre is chasing another magic moment as Shrewsbury go into Friday's play-off semi-final with Torquay United looking to wipe out a two-goal deficit.McIntyre was the man who helped Town to Wembley in 2009 when his dramatic late goal at Gigg Lane overturned Bury's first-leg lead to set up extra time.

Town then won on penalties to reach the League Two final at Wembley.

"It was the best moment of my career, but I want someone else to have a lifetime memory like that," he said.

Shrewsbury's promotion dreams were to be shattered in the final two years ago when they were beaten by a last-minute goal against Gillingham at Wembley.

But it was McIntyre who came up with the goods in the semi at Gigg Lane after Neil Ashton's own goal had given Bury a 1-0 first-leg win at Oteley Road.

"Ashy was obviously disappointed," recalls McIntyre. "But I was behind him when we got off the bus at Bury and the fans were there cheering him and we went out to win.

If you think about Liverpool's achievement in the Champions League final in 2005, that was the ultimate comeback. So anything is possible

"I get my leg pulled sometimes, because I never tire talking about my goal," the midfielder told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"But I really hope someone eclipses it on Friday to get us through - and I'll be the first to pat them on the back when they score."

Liverpool-born McIntyre even draws a comparison with one of the most famous comebacks of all time - his hometown team's astonishing recovery from 3-0 down to beat AC Milan in Istanbul six years ago.

"If you think about Liverpool's achievement in the Champions League final in 2005, that was the ultimate comeback," said McIntyre. "So anything is possible.

"I hope we can draw inspiration from my goal because it shows that if you keep trying and don't give up, you can turn it round."

The League Two play-off final will be against the winners of the Stevenage-Accrington semi, which also stands at 2-0 after the first leg, at Old Trafford on Saturday week (28 May).
