Peters wants to instill a siege mentality at the club and has told players that he has wiped the slate clean.

Peters said: 'I'm here to do a job, and my first job is to make sure we get enough points as quickly as possible to stay in this division, and the second is to build for the future.'

He also reassured fans that he was confident when operating in positions such as Shrewsbury's. He said: 'I think the most important thing for the fans of Shrewsbury to know is that I've been in this position twice before.

"At Preston I took over when they were third bottom around Christmas time and we ended up in the play-offs, the next season we got promoted as champions.

"At Exeter I took on an even bigger challenge with them 5-points adrift at the bottom having played three games more than the teams above them, there were thirteen games left, we ended up getting 20-points out of those last 13 games which would have been play-off form."

Peters confirmed that he would be working with the current coaching staff: "I'd be stilly if I didn't utilise the strengths that we already have got at the football club," he said.

Peters also said he believed that there would be possibilities for bringing in players. He added: "I'm sure if I knock on the door to bring someone in on loan or on contract I'm sure the board of directors will back me.

"They are very ambitious and it was part of their ambition and drive that made me join the football club."
