Bobby Grant's 14th goal of the season settled matters after 26 minutes, coming courtesy of a dreadful mix-up between Kelvin Langmead and Shane Cansdell-Sherriff that left the Stanley forward with a simple chance to score from eight yards.
Speaking about his side's wastefulness in front of goal, Simpson said: "You simply have to take chances like that.
"You have to be ruthless and take the chances that have brought us five games without defeat, but for whatever reason we simply didn't do things."
