Town boss Graham Turner revealed earlier this week he was keen to bolster his ranks ahead of Thursday`s final loan deadline, and he has already done just that.
The versatile Canavan, 19, progressed through the youth ranks at Glanford Park before penning a professional contract in 2009. To date, he has made 20 appearances for the Iron`s first team, including 10 this season.
The youngster told Town`s official website: "I`ve come here with the aim of playing games so it`s up to me to show what I can do and get a place in the team."
Turner added: "He`s a big strong lad, he`s a powerful player, has a really good left foot and defends really well. We are a bit short in the left side of defence with only Shane Cansdell-Sherriff and Mat Sadler so Niall will give us another option."
However, Canavan will be unavailable for this weekend`s trip to Bradford having been drafted into the Republic of Ireland`s Under-21 squad on Tuesday afternoon.
