But the Shrews were unable to make the most of their numerical advantage and Greg Pearson levelled for the hosts with 14 minutes remaining.
"We've let Burton off the hook, no doubt about that," said Simpson. "In the end they deserved a point for the way they played in the second half, but to be honest we didn't do enough to make sure we didn't lose the lead.
"We had a situation at half-time where if we go about our business properly the game is ours. We went a little bit too negative, we didn't get hold of the ball enough and we didn't pass it."
"That was a game we should have won because of the circumstances and I'm very disappointed we didn't take it on and do just that. We've now taken seven points from three away games, which we shouldn't scoff at, but it feels as though we have not done ourselves any favours."
