The forward joined on a free transfer after his contract at rivals Telford was cancelled amid their financial meltdown.

Jimmy Quinn continued his policy of signing players he has worked with, linking uo with the striker he managed at Nortwich. Again, the Shrews convinced Grant to join them ahead of other League clubs.

Quinn told the Shropshire Star: 'I admire John's style of play and it gives us extra options.' Grant is in a similar mould to Duane Darby and scored for Telford againt Town last season.

Grant will not be short of friends at the Meadow, where he will rejoin former team mates Trevor Challis and Stuart Whitehead.

Elsewhere, Shrewsbury have confirmed that they will replace the aging goalposts at the Meadow. The posts have been there for 22 years and are being replaced to ensure they are safe for the coming season.

The goals will be sold on Ebay and replaced with Euro 2004-style goals costing £3000.

They've never been the same since I hit the bar in 2000!
