Shrewsbury's season ended on a high note as they edged to victory over near neighbours Chester.

Despite having only local pride to play for, both sides produced an open encounter in which plenty of chances were carved out at each end.

The visitors' winner came as early as the ninth minute when Kelvin Langmead rose highest in the box to send a towering header into the net.

After 19 minutes Sagi Burton went close with an audacious shot direct from a free-kick, the defender striking the ball from inside his own half only to see it fly just wide.

Chester threatened the Shrewsbury goal 10 minutes from the interval when striker Derek Asamoah 's goal-bound shot was deflected over by Burton. From the resulting corner, Jake Edwards headed just over.

Chester had a great opportunity to level matters five minutes into the second period when Ben Davies was sent clear by Edwards. The midfielder rounded keeper Joe Hart and looked set to score until Ben Herd raced back to get in a vital last-ditch interception.

Tom Curtis hit a powerful drive from 25 yards which just cleared the crossbar, and at the other end a quick break by the visitors after 70 minutes saw Colin McMenamin racing through on goal, but he was denied by defender Luke Dimech who showed an unexpected turn of pace to chase back and put in a fine covering challenge.

Goal-scorer Langmead had a great chance to kill off the game 13 minutes from time, but his powerfully-hit shot was matched by a great reflex save from keeper Chris MacKenzie.

Two minutes later the same player was denied again as his goal-bound header was tipped over by the Chester keeper.

A late chance to snatch a point was spurned by Gregg Blundell when he was clean through on goal, but shot against the legs of the visiting keeper.
