Shrewsbury kept their title hopes on track with a late equaliser at lowly Leigh.

After a goalless first half the second period came to life after just 46 seconds when Colin Cramb scored for the visitors but two goals from David McNiven put RMI in front before substitute Kevin Street levelled in stoppage time.

Duane Darby and Cramb exchanged passes on six minutes with the latter striking the woodwork and Paul Shepherd cleared off the line after Cramb latched onto the rebound.

Warren Peyton's 25-yard shot was tipped over by Scott Howie and the same player then brought a fine block from the Shrews keeper.

Darby turned and shot wide from the edge of the box before McNiven missed a glorious chance to put Leigh in front on the stroke of half time when he failed to capitalise on a mix-up in the visitors' six-yard box.

It was a costly miss, as Shrewsbury opened the second half in meaningful fashion and immediately took the lead.

Darby won the ball and laid it into the path of Cramb, who beat Gary Kelly from the edge of the box with a glorious finish.

Sam Aiston then had a great tricky run down the left which ended with Cramb curling a shot just wide off Kelly's far post with the keeper beaten.

However, when Shrewsbury failed to deal with a Shepherd cross in the 67th minute, McNiven bundled the ball over the line for his tenth goal of the season and his first in five games.

Payton then had another free-kick tipped over by Howie before the Shrews keeper easily saved Wayne Maden's shot on the turn.

Payton's persistence with long-range efforts paid off in the 76th minute when Howie could only block another effort but McNiven was on the spot to tap home.

Martin O'Connor hit the bar after a goalmouth melee as Shrewsbury charged forward looking for the equaliser and it finally came in the 90th minute.

Luke Rodgers made a run across the box and when the ball broke for Street he had the easiest of tasks, tapping into the open net for the equaliser.
