Shrewsbury moved into the first round of the FA Cup with this convincing victory over their Conference rivals.

Jimmy Quinn's side were handed the initiative as early as the fourth minute when Morecambe were reduced to ten men.

Adriano Rigoglioso was the man to see red after an off-the-ball kick at Shrewsbury defender Greg Rioch, and from that moment the home side were always up against it.

They battled valiantly however, and even had the first two real chances of the game when Michael Stringfellow headed a Gary Thompson cross inches wide and Chris Lane saw a fierce free-kick well parried away by Scott Howie.

Only after those early shocks did the visitors begin to make their advantage count.

Morecambe keeper Craig Mawson had to be at his best to save well from Luke Rodgers and the dangerous Sam Aiston before David Ridler headed a Martin O'Connor corner against the top of the crossbar.

Aiston forced the Morecambe keeper into two more neat saves before finally giving his side the lead on 46 minutes.

The lively winger curled in a right-foot cross from the left touchline that beat everyone before ending up in the back of the Morecambe.

Three minutes later the scores should have been level however. Ryan Sugden took the ball around Howie but saw his shot superbly cleared off the line by Darren Tinson.

He was made to pay for his miss when Shrewsbury added a second three minutes later when Rodgers saw his cross from the left tapped in by player-manager Quinn from two yards out.

Morecambe however fought back almost immediately and from a Lane free-kick, Sugden made amends for his earlier miss with a header which looped over the stranded Howie and into the back of the net.

Sensing signs of weakness at the back, Morecambe piled bodies forward and Thomspon should have done better than shoot straight at Howie on 66 minutes after a Ridler error.

Like Sugden before him, he was made to pay for his lack of prowess in front of goal as Shrewsbury clinched the tie with two goals in quick succession from substitute Ryan Lowe on 77 and 80 minutes.

Morecambe battled bravely to the end and Lee Collins added a second on 89 minutes but it proved a mere consolation as Shrewsbury earned their place in the first round and a trip to Scunthorpe.
