Shrewsbury Town ended a memorable week with a hard-earned point from a goalless, but entertaining encounter against high-flying Bournemouth at Gay Meadow.

Their FA Cup victory over Barrow last Saturday earned them a lucrative third round home tie against Everton, while an LDV Vans Trophy win over Port Vale on Tuesday brought a home semi-final against near neighbours Crewe in this morning's draw.

Although Shrewsbury went close to ending the week on a winning note against third in the table Bournemouth, both sides went close to breaking the deadlock in this action-packed affair that neither team deserved to lose.

In the first minute Marcus Browning was only inches away from giving the Cherries the lead, but he just failed to connect wih a Danny Thomas cross.

Before ten minutes had passed, the lively Wade Elliott struck a Shrewsbury post with an angled drive.

At the other end Shrewsbury currently in a run of just one defeat in their last 11 games, also began to create chances and in the 15th minute central defender Matt Redmile saw his header superbly saved by on-loan keeper Neil Moss.

In the scramble that followed Luke Rodgers hit the bar before Jason van Blerk sliced wide from close range.

As half-time approached Rodgers - seeking his tenth league goal of the season - twice went close to putting Shrewsbury ahead, but shortly after the break Bournemouth almost went in front with Steve Fletcher and Gareth O'Connor both going close.

In the 57th minute Rogers' strike partner Ryan Lowe did put the ball in the net - only for his effort to be ruled out by an offside flag.

As the match continued to ebb and flow, Elliott saw his long-range strike hit the Shrewsbury crossbar.

Just 13 minutes from time Rodgers almost snatched victory for Shrewsbury, but his strong run ended with a shot into the sidenetting, leaving a draw the right outcome.
