Shrewsbury 1-0 Stevenage- Match Report

Nicky Wroe marked his home debut with a classy winner as Shrewsbury beat Stevenage 1-0 to boost their promotion hopes.

Former Torquay midfielder Wroe, the most influential player on either side, made the breakthrough in the 37th minute. Lionel Ainsworth's shot was blocked but Wroe, breaking into the box, controlled instantly before flicking a measured shot into the far corner of the net.

Wroe had earlier gone close with a stinging 20-yard drive which was helped over the bar by goalkeeper Chris Day.

Shane Cansdell-Sherriff almost doubled the home side's advantage just after the break when he headed a Jon Taylor free kick against the bar.

Stevenage called the tune for much of the last half-hour as they chased an equaliser.

Chris Beardsley headed wide from close range before record signing Craig Reid was denied by a fine save from Ben Smith.

Shrewsbury grew increasingly edgy as the final whistle moved into view but a strong defensive display in which Cansdell-Sherriff and skipper Ian Sharps excelled just about saw them over the line as they climbed into second spot.
