Shrewsbury’s relegation fears were heightened following defeat against fellow strugglers Boston United.

Peter Duffield put the visitors ahead on 43 minutes with Neil Redfearn scoring what proved to be the decisive goal three minutes into the second half.

Ryan Lowe pulled one back for the Shrews in the 73rd minute and although he hit the woodwork four minutes from the end Boston held out to complete a double over Shrewsbury whom they beat 6-0 in December.

Shrewsbury created a host of chances but lacked a clinical touch in the final third.

Lowe twice missed from close range as Kevin Ratciffe’s men started brightly, while skipper Nigel Jemson was unable to convert from a tight angle after Boston keeper Paul Bastock misjudged the centre.

They were made to pay dearly for those wasted opportunities as Boston took the lead from their first worthwhile attack.

The impressive Simon Weatherstone slipped a pass through the static Shrewsbury defence allowing Duffield to advance and slide his shot passed Shrews keeper Ian Dunbavin.

In the 48th minute Redfearn was on hand to crash the ball home from 15 yards as Boston increased their advantage.

Lowe reduced the deficit scoring from close range in the 73rd minute as Shrewsbury eventually had something to show for their efforts. However, they were unable to find a equaliser as Boston held firm.
