Shrewsbury 2-0 Cheltenham- Match Report

Shrews maintain promotion push

Shrewsbury remain firmly in the race for automatic promotion after seeing off fellow high fliers Cheltenham 2-0 at Greenhous Meadow.

Recalled midfielder Nicky Wroe wasted no time in making an impact having been recalled as he fired Shrewsbury - now unbeaten at home in 27 games - in front after just 44 seconds.

James Collins crossed low from the left and Wroe smashed a first time shot past Robins goalkeeper Jack Butland from just inside the penalty area.

Wroe might have had a first half hat-trick as he drove narrowly wide from 20 yards before being denied by a brilliant save from England Under-21 international Butland just before the break.

Cheltenham enjoyed plenty of possession but found chances hard to come by with an unmarked Luke Summerfield heading their best opportunity straight at goalkeeper Chris Neal.

Butland was at fault for Shrewsbury's second goal nine minutes into the second half. He badly fumbled Jon Taylor's cross from the right and Terry Gornell, another man brought back into the starting line-up by boss Graham Turner, tapped in.

Cheltenham, who have now lost four successive games, never suggested a fightback was likely as home keeper Neal had a comfortable night.
