Struggling Shrewsbury Town remained rooted in the Third Division drop zone after a demoralising 3-2 home defeat against Macclesfield Town.

For the third time in four home matches the Gay Meadow side conceded a last minute goal to lose a match from which they should have taken a point.

John Miles' last-gasp winner for the visitors gave them victory by the odd goal in five and at the same time sentenced Kevin Ratcliffe's men to a third straight defeat to leave the Shrews staring relegation in the face.

That last minute strike from Miles, his second goal of the game, was a cruel blow for Shrewsbury who twice came from behind to be level by the break.

After half time the Gay Meadow side dominated the game and always looked the more likely winners, but once again conceding so late cost them dear as their Football League status now hangs in the balance.

George Abbey steered the Moss Rose outfit ahead in the seventh minute, only for Shrewsbury to be level eight minutes later, when winger Sam Aiston followed up to score after Macclesfield keeper Steve Wilson had saved well from Robin Hulbert.

Despite going close on a number of occasions Shrewsbury found themselves trailing again on 40 minutes when the impressive Miles took advantage of some slack marking to put the Silkmen back in front.

They were, however, ahead for just 90 seconds as the Shrews hit back with a firm header from Nigel Jemson, the Shrewsbury skipper nodding home a Peter Wilding cross to claim his tenth league goal of the season.

In the second half Shrewsbury held sway for long periods, but could not find a way past Wilson, but then, right at the death Miles had the final say to leave Shrewsbury contemplating a must-win home match against fellow strugglers Boston United on Saturday.
