The eagerly-awaited Shropshire derby ended with honours even, as Shrewsbury Town and near-neighbours Telford United fought out a fiercely-contested, but ultimately goalless draw.

Visitors Telford will be happier with their point than the home side, particularly as the Bucks Head outfit played the final 21 minutes of the match with ten men following the dismissal of defender Andy Wilkinson, who was red carded for a foul on Shrewsbury striker Colin Cramb as he closed in on the penalty area.

But, a well-marshalled Bucks defence held firm despite incessant Shrewsbury pressure and, with United goalkeeper Chris Mackenzie also in fine form, it amounted to a frustrating night for the Gay Meadow side.

Fresh from their excellent FA Cup second round triumph over Brentford last Saturday Telford made the short journey down the M54 in confident mood, but were quickly forced onto the defensive by a Shrews side eager to maintain their Conference promotion push.

In the 18th minute striker Luke Rodgers burst onto a throughball from Welsh U-21 international midfielder Jamie Tolley only to see his shot well-saved by Mackenzie, yet despite all their possession near things from Duane Darby and Martin O'Connor were all Shrewsbury had to show for their efforts as the first half came to a close.

After the break Cramb and impressive second-half substitute Jody Banim brought good saves from Mackenzie - but Telford saw their task of hanging onto a point made even harder on 69 minutes when Wilkinson was given his marching orders by referee Brand.

Banim continued to pose Telford problems and twice more tested Mackenzie, but the visitors held out to secure a hard-earned point, leaving Shrewsbury to rue their inability to turn almost 90 minutes of pressure into a victory.
