Shrewsbury Town consolidated their place in the Nationwide Conference play-off frame with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Woking, in a Gay Meadow encounter that ended in stormy fashion.

This often untidy encounter was ultimately decided by an impressive 72nd minute strike from Shrews striker Luke Rodgers, but it was for the last ten minutes that this contest will be remembered.

When referee Woolmer booked Woking substitute Michael Johnson whilst warming up, for remarks made to a linesman in 84th minute, it heralded the start of some frantic card activity.

Sixty seconds later, Woking boss Glenn Cockerill was ordered from the technical area for speaking out of turn, with Shrewsbury substitute Duane Darby next in the book for what appeared an innocuous challenge.

Worse was to follow for both sides, however, when in the last minute Shrewsbury's flying winger Sam Aiston and Woking substitute Davis Haule - who had only been on the field six minutes - had a tussle which resulted in both players being given their marching orders.

This catalogue of incidents was strangely out of keeping with a match that up until the dying minutes had been decidedly low-key.

In fact it was only in the second half that the game finally came to life with Woking goalkeeper Ashley Bayes called upon to save from Rodgers and then his strike partner Colin Cramb, in impressive fashion.

But 18 minutes from the end there was nothing Bayes could do as Rodgers eventually broke the deadlock.

Taking a neat pass from substitute Jody Banim, Rodgers netted with a fine angled drive from just inside the penalty area.

But then, just as the game seemed to be heading for a quiet conclusion, the latter stages, with its rash of cards of both colours, gave the match an unexpected twist.
