Shrewsbury Town put their Nationwide Conference play-off bid back on course with a comfortable 2-0 home win over visiting Forest Green Rovers.

After a lacklustre first-half display, two goals within five minutes at the start of the second half, put the outcome of this often scrappy encounter beyond all doubt.

Despite being on top for long periods of the game, all Shrewsbury had to show for their efforts were a 47th minute strike from Jamie Tolley, followed four minutes later by a smart volley from player-manager Jimmy Quinn, but three welcome points allowed Shrewsbury to make up further ground on the promotion frontrunners.

Following their FA Cup heartbreak at third division Scunthorpe last Saturday, Shrewsbury were beaten by a last-minute goal and then missed a penalty in the dying seconds, boss Quinn was forced to re-shuffle his back-line when skipper Darren Tinson was a late injury withdrawal.

Quinn's opposite number Colin Addison, who himself was interviewed for the Shrewsbury job back in the summer, brought Forest Green for their first ever visit to Gay Meadow on the back of just one defeat in five matches, following a poor start to the campaign.

While they dominated for long periods of the first half, Shrewsbury failed to make much headway against a resolute Forest Green defence, behind which goalkeeper Steve Perrin was in impressive form.

In the 14th minute he made an excellent save to thwart Quinn's close-range header and also did well to palm away a low drive from the same player.

But after keeping Shrewsbury at bay for the opening period, Forest Green were breached just 90 seconds after the break, Tolley netting with a smart shot from the edge of the box.

Victory was then secured on 51 minutes when Quinn volleyed home smartly from ten yards to net his fourth goal in five games.

Aside from a diving header from Scott Rogers that flashed wide with 20 minutes left, Forest Green offered little in attack as Shrewsbury played out time at a canter.
