Shrewsbury Town won the first half of their seven-day double header against Morecombe, winning this hard-fought Conference encounter 2-0, to put their promotion quest back on track.

Next Saturday, the sides face each other again, this time in the FA Cup fourth round qualifying, but Shrewsbury will go into that tie the more confident, as a goal in each half from Luke Rodgers and player-manager Jimmy Quinn, settled this often disjointed match.

But victory enabled Shrewsbury to move back above Jim Harvey's men and return to the Conference play-off frame.

After a recent dip in form, that has resulted in Quinn placing no fewer than five players on the transfer list, Shrewsbury gave a debut to 25-year-old midfield man Kevin Street, whose former clubs include Crewe Alexandra and more recently Bristol Rovers.

Anxious to return to the winning trail, Shrewsbury began brightly with flying winger Sam Aiston denied by a fine save from Morecombe keeper Craig Mawson in the fifth minute, with Rodgers and Quinn both going close before Rodgers struck decisively in the 11th minute.

After escaping the visitors' offside trap he advanced on goal only to see his powerful drive well-blocked by Mawson, but Rodgers was first to the rebound and nudged the ball home for his eighth goal of the season.

Although Dean Howell raised the visitors' hopes by firing narrowly over just before the half hour, it was always Shrewsbury who looked the more dangerous, with Mawson once again impressing as he palmed over a Martin O'Connor free-kick, before Aiston was inches from increasing Shrewsbury's lead when his curling drive sailed narrowly over.

After the break Shrewsbury continued to press with Welsh under-21 midfielder Jamie Tolley twice threatening, but at the other end Shrewsbury keeper Scott Howie was called into rare action when he blocked a close-range effort from Lee Collins.

But 14 minutes from time Quinn put the outcome beyond doubt, scoring his second goal of the season with a downward header, after Street had crossed to the far post.
