Two goals from striker Kelvin Langmead gave Shrewsbury a deserved 2-0 victory over high-flying Cheltenham at Gay Meadow.

With a goal in each half Langmead secured the points for Shrewsbury, for whom victory finally banished any lingering relegation fears. This defeat, however, puts a dent in Cheltenham's promotion hopes.

The Shrews' disappointing defeat at Macclesfield last week set in motion some behind the scenes changes at Gay Meadow - with coach Mick Wadsworth departing the club on Monday after a 14-month stint and ex-Torquay boss Leroy Rosenior appointed as Gary Peters' assistant on Thursday.

Rosenior, who watched from the dug out, arrives at Shrewsbury with a big endorsement from Peters, who is delighted with the appointment.

In a game in which both sides struggled in blustery conditions, Shrews made the breakthrough when Langmead was on hand to head home a Neil Ashton corner on 32 minutes.

As the match became locked in a midfield stalemate the home side put the issue beyond doubt 14 minutes from time. Langmead stabbing the ball home from close range to ensure victory.

Cheltenham responded with a disallowed goal from sub Ashley Vincent, that was chalked off for a hand ball offence and a drive from Gavin Caines that smashed against the bar but the home side held out for a hard earned win.
