A Luke Rodgers double blast for Shresbury Town helped them to a derseved 3-2 win over Southend.

The 20 year old hit man was expected to miss the Roots Hall clash with a combination of groin and deadleg injuries but the young striker climbed off the treatment table to inspire the Shrews to their first away victory, despite Southend taking an early lead.

Shimpers winger Neil Jenkins stroked the hosts in front from six yards after meeting a Steve Broad cross. However the Shrews went on to dominate and Rodgers netted an acute angled equaliser five minutes before the break after running on to Mark Atkins' pass.

Twelve minutes after the restart, Rodgers grabbed an early goal of the season contender as he beat two Southend defenders before rifling an unstoppable 18-yard drive into the top left-hand corner of the goal.

Shrewsbury were coasting at this stage and influential midfielder Atkins headed an easy third goal from a 77th minute Ian Woan corner.

Southend reduced the deficit nine minutes from time when Tes Bramble converted a penalty after being fouled by visiting substitute Leon Drisdale.

Paying tribute to striker Rodgers, Shrews boss Kevin Ratcliffe said: "Luke was superb for us at Southend and on another day could have had five goals. But this is a team game and I was also pleased with the quality of passing that lead to his strikes."

Southend manager Rob Newman added: "We've been beaten by a one million pound forward who's far too good for this level of the game. We just couldn't handle him."
