Stockport's survival hopes were boosted by a 3-1 home victory against Shrewsbury Town, their fifth success in the last eight games.

The hosts fully deserved their win; they created the lion share of the chances and have now put a huge dent in Shrewsbury's fading play-off hopes.

The atmosphere was electric at Edgeley Park as the home fans did their best to rally the players, and it was Stockport who caught the first sight of goal on nine minutes when Adam Griffin fired in a shot which Joe Hart saved well.

County goalkeeper James Spencer then had to be alert to keep out headers from Sagi Burton and Kelvin Langmead, but as the game started to liven up Tes Bramble powered in a similar effort at the other end which Hart again saved well.

Langmead rose well but failed to test Spencer, then as the game picked up an excellent high early tempo, Stockport loan man Jamie Ward saw a rasping shot bravely blocked by Richard Hope.

Stockport were having the better of things as half time approached. On the half-hour mark central defender Ashley Williams glanced a header inches wide of Shrewsbury's post.

However Stockport opened the scoring on 36 minutes when Liam Dickinson found space on the left and teed up Ward perfectly. The little winger steadied himself before smashing home a superb drive from 15 yards.

After the break Mark Stallard went close as the Shrews pressed hard early on.

But on 54 minutes Stockport doubled their lead with another quality strike. This time Bramble laid the ball perfectly into the path of Kevin O'Connor, and he drove home a superb strike from 20 yards for his first goal for the Hatters.

It didn't take long for Shrewsbury to hit back, though. Just beyond the hour mark Hope knocked the ball into the danger zone and ex-Stockport man Glynn Hurst flicked home from close range.

Stockport were not to be denied however. After further chances from Bramble and Michael Raynes had gone begging, Burton fouled Bramble in the box on 85 minutes and Robinson calmly slotted home the spot-kick.
