Gulls keep on soaring

Torquay registered their sixth successive win to overtake promotion rivals Shrewsbury and soar into fourth spot in npower League Two with a 1-0 victory at Plainmoor.

Torquay grabbed the only goal of the game in the 68th minute. Recalled striker Taiwo Atieno looped a header towards goal following Danny Stevens' cross from the left and central defender Mark Ellis seemed to help the ball over the line in the ensuing goalmouth scramble.

Visiting keeper Chris Neal made a brilliant save to tip over Stevens' 24th-minute goalbound effort after being teed up by Atieno.

Target man Atieno came closest to scoring for the home side in the first half, cleverly redirecting Damon Lathrope's thumping cross from the left just past the post.

Shrewsbury started the brighter of the two sides, with striker James Collins bouncing a header off the bar from Nicky Wroe's third-minute cross from the right, but Stevens responded with a fifth-minute volleyed effort from 20 yards that flew just over.

Collins also volleyed just wide as Shrewsbury countered and then sent a low effort past the post in the 36th minute.
