Shrewsbury have strengthened their defensive options by signing Mat Sadler on a six-month loan deal from Watford. The 25-year-old started his career with Birmingham City and made his Premier League debut at 19 after captaining the England under-16 and under-17 sides.

The full-back joined Watford for £750,000 in January 2008, but was loaned out to Stockport last season.

"He's a good footballer with a lovely left foot," Shrewsbury assistant boss John Trewick told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"We made him a priority target, and he should do a good job for us."

Sadler made his Birmingham debut at 17 in a League Cup tie at Leyton Orient in October 2002.

An ankle injury limited him to 52 appearances for the Blues before his move to Watford, where he played 35 games.
