Shrews boss in talks with Cureton

"Cureton is a player I've spoken to, but I haven't had a yes or nor - but that also goes for a number of others," Simpson told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"I'm looking for someone with a track record of scoring goals, but at the moment I'm hitting a brick wall."

Cureton's 18-year professional career started at Norwich before he moved to Bristol Rovers, Reading and QPR, returning to Norwich in the summer of 2007.

But he has struggled to keep a first-team place this season and Norwich boss Paul Lambert told the Eastern Daily Press: "This is his last year, as he knows, and he's got to get playing football for his own sake as well.

"I've not had one bit of a problem with him, but we have lads who are ahead of Jamie at the minute."

Simpson has admitted he needs a striker to boost Shrewsbury's push for promotion from League Two.

"To be honest, I've been looking since Grant Holt left [for Norwich] in the summer, and more now since Omer Riza left and Nathan Elder went out on loan for the rest of the season [to AFC Wimbledon].

"You'd think players would want to come to a decent club, with a decent stadium, and score a few goals for their CV - but getting definitive answers is proving impossible.

"The only one we had was John O'Flynn at Barnet, who didn't want a permanent deal but would have loved to come on loan - but then Barnet said they didn't want a loan deal."
