Shrews bring back Meadow name

Fans chose for Shrewsbury to use part of the name of their former ground, the Gay Meadow, which will be incorporated with stadium sponsor Greenhous.

"It takes a little bit of history forward with us," said Town's commercial director Ian Bebbington.

Supporters had been offered the choice of Park, Stadium, Arena and even Coliseum, but Meadow was added after a number of protest-calls to BBC Radio Shropshire.

"We're delighted with the name, and delighted that fans had a say in it - it shows we're a progressive club but also a community club," Bebbington added.

Next season is also Shrewsbury's 125th anniversary and they will carry a special '125 years' logo on their anniversary shirts, alongside the new sponsor's branding.

Shrews fans voted overwhelmingly for the 'Meadow' tag, after it was added to the list of choices in response to their requests.

One voter will be picked at random to conduct the official naming ceremony at the first home game of the season in August, and will win VIP match tickets to that game.

The new name reflects the affection in which the old ground, the Gay Meadow, was held.

"We really want to get as many people as possible involved with our sponsorship, and the vote to name the ground was just the first of a series of initiatives to give as many as possible the opportunity to participate," said Dave Sullivan from Greenhous.
